As we wrap this series, it’s important to call out a few things. LGBTQ+ issues in the workplace have yet to be completely resolved, and it is an ongoing process in detecting, identifying, and mitigating issues unique to us. As a transgender man myself who worked closely with the LGBTQ+ community at my university while obtaining a master’s degree in Industrial-Organizational Psychology, I always had people approach me and say, “C.J., how can we help?” I will tell you the same thing I told them.
The most critical part is always education because education turns on the receptors in our brains that allow for empathy because understanding makes empathizing a whole lot easier. LGBTQ+ people are no different from any other human being: we have ambition, dreams, team roles, loved ones, and we make mistakes, hurt, persevere, succeed, and strive just like anyone else. It is because we are human beings that there is not a quick fix to our problems, but taking this journey with us today through the unique paths and experiences of those in the LGBTQ+ community is a necessary step toward progress. My advice to you is to never stop learning and make room for plenty of corrections along the way because nobody is born knowing this information (no, not even LGBTQ+ people). However, in an age of information, ignorance is no longer viable. We hope that you have enjoyed our daily doses of Pride and apply these lessons to your lives, both personally and professionally!
