After speaking to dozens of women of color in higher ed, I noticed some recurring themes:

After several engagements with these leaders, particularly women of color leaders in higher ed, my desire to support them grew tenfold. My goal has always been to inspire greatness in others by sharing this knowledge and experience with those who don’t have access to the information.

I realized that I could add tremendous value to the academy by supporting these women in successfully shifting from extraordinary subject matter experts to powerhouse leaders who will continue to add value to their field while inspiring others to do the same. In doing so, I can combine my passion for leadership and team development with my first love, higher education.

True story: I started my career in higher ed in student affairs. I spent time at Marquette University, Barnard College, and Columbia University before shifting to the corporate sector. While completing my PhD in Social-Organizational Psychology, and throughout my 15 years of industry experience, I learned so much about the theoretical frameworks behind leadership and effective teams.

But as I’ve worked with leaders at universities, I have not seen those insights leveraged. It’s frustrating to watch such talented individuals, experts in their field, struggle because they haven’t been equipped with the basic knowledge and infrastructure to support them in becoming effective leaders.
